You will start the adventure early in the morning, leaving Cusco and heading towards “Pilcopata” in a private transport. The first stop will be in “Paucartambo”, a typical colonial town with narrow streets and a beautiful colonial church. Lunch on the route. We continue towards the Cloud Forest, an area very rich in endemic species such as the Spectacled Bear and Cock-of-the-Rock, orchids, bromeliads, ferns, etc. observing nature and then continue until we reach our lodge Orquídeas de San Pedro where we will spend our first night comfortably installed.
After breakfast, we will look for the interesting Cock-of-the-Rock, Peru’s national bird that performs a unique courtship ritual. We continue to the town of Pilcopata*, then to the port of Atalaya, a place located on the banks of the Alto Madre de Dios River, at 700 meters above sea level. Where we will begin the descent by boat to observe the enormous diversity of bird species, such as herons, vultures, cormorants, etc. until we reach our Private Reserve “Erika”. We will walk along the interesting trails of this transitional point between high jungle and low jungle. Overnight at the lodge.
Free optional – Canoeing: From Pilcopata we will do 1 hour of canoeing, along the Koñeq and/or Alto Madre de Dios rivers. We can enjoy the landscape and take advantage of it to cool off.
After breakfast, we will board our boat to cross the river and walk 30 minutes along a path to observe and talk about the diversity of flora such as sensitive plants, heliconias, fruit trees, etc. until we reach the Machuwasi lagoon where we will paddle in rustic canoes to observe birds such as the primitive hoatzin, hopefully caimans, monkeys and capybaras. Night walk around our lodge to observe insects and amphibians.
On the last day of the trip, you will start the day off early to board a motorboat that will head downriver to the “Parrots Lick”. You will observe several types of parrots that call this area home. Here parakeets and macaws (among others) gather every morning to feed on clay. After this activity, you will return by boat to the lodge for breakfast and packing. Finally, you will travel upriver to Puerto Atalaya, where your transportation will be waiting for you to return to Cusco. Arrival in Cusco is approximately between 19:00 Hrs and 19:30 Hrs.
